Baylor University on Windmill Hill
Initially, Baylor opened its co-educational studies in Independence with 24 students at a temporary site on Academy Hill, with plans to build the University’s permanent home here on Windmill Hill. Rufus Burleson altered those plans when he assumed the Baylor presidency in 1851. Separating the sexes, Burleson moved the boys to Windmill Hill to what became the Male Campus and primary university facility while the girls remained at the Academy Hill location (now the site of Old Baylor Park).
John P. Coles Cabin and Independence Log Cabin
The Coles Cabin and the Log House, both predating 1845 when Texas became a state, are typical Texas pioneer houses. The Independence Historical Society offers free tours of both houses and Mound Hill Schoolhouse, also in Old Baylor Park, on selected March and April weekends.
Old Baylor Park and Baylor Female College
The columns in Old Baylor Park in Independence mark the location where Baylor University, the oldest institution of higher learning in the State of Texas and the largest Baptist university in the world, opened its doors in 1846.
Sam Houston Homesite
In 1853, Sam Houston, first president of the Republic of Texas, bought the house that was on this site, and moved his wife and growing family to Independence because of its “advantages in an Educational point of view.” The home on the site is a private residence.

Texas Independence Day
Hosted at the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, this annual celebration on the weekend closest to March 2 features live music, food, traditional crafts, living history presentations, firing demonstrations, historical encampments and commemorative programs. Guests will experience life in 1836 Texas visiting with reenactors; witnessing firing demonstrations in the Texas Army camps; watching cooking, weaving and period craft demonstrations; and walking the same trail as Texas’ forefathers and pioneer families. Texas musicians and actors provide musical and theatrical entertainment. A Kid Zone allows children to dress up in historical costumes. Sign a large-scale copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence and take photos near the Declaration.
Washington-on-the Brazos State Historic Site
The picturesque Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is located on the Brazos River. The expansive park grounds along the Brazos River provide a beautiful setting for picnicking, sightseeing and birdwatching. The Star of the Republic Museum, Independence Hall and Barrington Plantation offer visitors a unique insight into the lives and times of the men who fought and won Texas' independence from Mexico. They host numerous events throughout the year.
