What is International Women's Day?
International Women’s Day began in the early 1900’s as a response to increased female activism and unrest. As women campaigned for change in the United States and across the world, the first National Women’s Day was celebrated in America in February of 1909. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated by Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911 after being created and voted upon at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. These early International Women’s Day celebrations worked to end discrimination and focused on women’s rights to work, vote, and hold public office.
Since its early roots in labor movements and women’s marches, International Women’s Day has grown to become a day of celebration and acknowledgement of women’s achievements throughout the world. The United Nations recognizes International Women’s Day as a global day dedicated to women’s rights and international peace. Today, it is a day that serves to recognize the political, economic, and social achievements of women throughout the world. International Women’s Day is celebrated across the world in countries such as China, Cuba, Russia, Vietnam, and Zambia with political rallies, conferences, theatre performances, parades, and gift-giving to women.
International Women's Day at Texas A&M
International Women’s Day was brought to Texas A&M in 2012 by the student organization Aggie Women in Leadership (now The American Association of University Women at Texas A&M University (AAUW-TAMU) and the Women's Resource Center. Recognizing the diverse nature of the Aggie family and the importance of global leadership, Aggie Women in Leadership felt that International Women’s Day was an important event to bring to the Texas A&M campus. With the goals of celebrating cultural diversity and raising awareness of global women’s issues, the 2012 celebration of International Women’s Day consisted of a “Cross-Cultural Catwalk” fashion show displaying traditional dress from countries around the world, and a panel discussion with representatives from Nigeria, Bolivia, Ghana, India and the Ukraine.
In 2015, AAUW-TAMU and the Women's Resource Center partnered with a number of student organizations to host the International Women's Day: Implementing Change Conference. In the following year, the student organizations programmed the conference around the theme of “Women in Power”. The conference is hosted annually on campus during Women's History Month and the theme for each year is chosen by the conference planning committee.
