LGBTQ+ 101 goes over the difference between sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression/presentation, and sexual/romantic orientation and includes an activity to bring attention to daily assumptions we make about identity. We also review gender-inclusive pronouns and how to create a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ identifying people and common micro-aggressions that may be seen. Interested in how you can better support our LGBTQ+ Aggies here at Texas A&M? This is a great place to start!
Transgender 101 goes over the difference between sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression/presentation, and sexual/romantic orientation and includes a discussion about how sexual/romantic orientations are separate and independent of transgender identities, but also how for some sexual/romantic identities, gender is important. This presentation also includes an activity in which participants are challenged to think about how safety differs for LGBQ+ individuals versus transgender individuals in certain situations. Looking to become more inclusive and provide a safe and supportive environment for our transgender Aggies? Transgender 101 is a great place to start!
LGBTQ+ For Educators covers everything that LGBTQ+ 101 covers, but the information is presented within the context of creating an inclusive classroom. Participants are challenged to think about the roles that gender plays in the classroom, including how students are socialized at school, broken up into groups, and the representations that students are exposed to. Current/future educators participating in this presentation will be challenged to think about the ways that their classroom organization and group facilitation skills rely on gender and sexual stereotypes and will be given resources on how to create more gender-inclusive spaces. There is an added focus on LGBTQ+ youth statistics, as well as resources on how to answer questions from younger students about sex and gender and how to combat bullying in the classroom.
LGBTQ+ For Educators is open to all Texas A&M educators/future educators as well as any groups working with youth/young adults.
We are open to all presentation requests! Some examples of custom programs that we have run in the past include Transgender Allyship, Gender Identity in Student Organizations, and LGBTQ+ Student Involvement. Thinking of something else? Let us know and we'll put something together for you.
