Academic Resources:
The academic transition from high school to college can be
difficult. There are many resources and services designed to provide you
with academic assistance and support. Costs associated with many of these
services are either included in your tuition and fees or are completely free
of charge.
Learning Skills Services
With the first round of tests completed, you might be
feeling like the study techniques you used in high school are no longer
sufficient to be successful at Texas A&M. Learning Skills Services, a unit
within the Student Counseling Services, provide students with an opportunity
to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enhance study and
exam-taking ability, while decreasing anxiety related to academic
performance. Services can include individual and group counseling,
assessment of study behaviors, screening for learning disabilities, an
extensive collection of self-help resources, and weekly workshops on a
variety of study skills topics. They also offer a learning skills
certificate program which is individually tailored to meet your needs and
involves a series of workshops, academic counseling sessions with a trained
academic skills counselor, and academic skills literature. Student
Counseling Services also features the Academic and Career Resource Center,
which offers a wealth of academic resources, such as computer programs,
study-skills literature, video tapes, and audio tapes featuring information
regarding test anxiety, academic stress, and even concentration. For more
information visit the Student Counseling Services’ website at
http://www.scs.tamu.edu.
Supplemental Instruction and Tutoring through the Student
Learning Center
Supplemental Instruction is an academic assistance program
coordinated by the Student Learning Center that is designed to improve your
student’s academic performance and increase retention. The SI program
targets traditionally difficult core curriculum courses and provides
regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer-facilitated group study sessions.
Recognizing that some students need individual tutoring, the Student
Learning Center also offers free tutoring sessions in some math and science
courses. For tutoring and supplemental instruction schedules, visit the
Student Learning Center website at
http://slc.tamu.edu.
Tutoring through the Department of Multicultural Services
The Department of Multicultural Services (DMS) offers FREE
one-on-one and group tutoring for all currently enrolled undergraduates at
Texas A&M University. The courses for which tutoring is offered vary from
semester to semester, but typically include many of the traditionally
difficult core science and math courses. For more information, visit
http://tutor.tamu.edu.
Tutoring through the Corps of Cadets
While not available to all Texas A&M students, the Corps of
Cadets offers professional, small group tutoring sessions in a variety of
math and science courses each semester. These tutoring sessions are FREE to
all cadets and are scheduled Sunday through Thursday nights. In past years,
tutoring sessions were provided for Engineering Math, Business Math, and
Physics for a total of seven different subjects. Additionally, the General
O.R. Simpson Corps Honor Society, which is composed of cadets who maintain
the highest of academic standards, also provides FREE tutoring to cadets in
many different subjects. Simpson Honor Society members tutor subjects in
which they are knowledgeable and have made superior grades. Tutoring is
one-on-one and is conducted on an as-needed basis. For more information
about either of these options provided by the Corps of Cadets, visit
http://www.aggiecorps.org/Academics/default.htm.
The University Writing Center
If writing is an area of concern for you or if you would
just like an extra eye to help with proofreading, the University Writing
Center (UWC) is an excellent resource. The UWC specializes in one-on-one
consultations with students needing help with their writing skills. A
trained writing consultant will guide you through the editing process and
teach you how to strengthen not only a lone assignment, but techniques and
skills that will come in handy later. UWC staff can help you with
brainstorming and freewriting, analyzing a topic or audience, rewriting a
draft, and with refining basic mechanics, grammar and punctuation. Access to
the UWC is covered by student fees, so Aggie are encouraged to utilize the
UWC whenever they need help. Just call or click to set up an appointment or
