Comprehensive Program Review
1997-1998

Introduction

The Comprehensive Program Review process was initiated within the Division of Student Affairs at Texas A&M University in the fall of 1997. At that time, the Offices of the Dean of Student Life held a retreat for the Department self study team in San Marcos, Texas. Dr. Leellen Brigman, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Southwest Texas State University, provided training in the comprehensive program review process. The Student Life self-study team developed an outline for the program review and established a time-line for completing the review. The self study team continued to meet regularly through the summer of 1998 as sections of the CPR report were completed and edited.

Comprehensive program reviews (CPRs) in Student Affairs serve many purposes, the most important is to improve departments and programs and identify opportunities for future development. CPRs provide a systematic mechanism to monitor the status, effectiveness, efficiency and progress of programs in the Student Affairs division and to provide information that allows the Division and the University to:

  • identify future directions, needs, and priorities;
  • recognize and respond to the strengths and weaknesses of the program and identify important directions in the professions;
  • assist in assessing a department’s relationships with and contributions to other programs within the University; and
  • strengthen and improve its programs and services to students.

The primary purpose of the comprehensive program review is program improvement as determined by:

  • quality of programs, services and activities;
  • availability of educational and program resources;
  • adequacy of administrative, professional and classified staffing patterns;
  • available facilities; and
  • expert evaluation.

Members of the self study team include:

  • Brent Paterson, Director of Student Life (chair)
  • Diane Carr, Administrative Secretary, Student Conflict Resolution Services
  • Ann Goodman, Assistant Director of Student Life
  • Helen Gutierres, Coordinator, Campus-wide Alcohol Education
