A. History
Texas A&M University, the states first public institution of
higher education, opened for classes in 1876. It holds the distinction of being one of a
few select universities to hold land grant, sea grant and space grant designations.
Originally established as a military institution, membership in the Corps of Cadets became
voluntary in 1965. A variety of academic programs of study for both undergraduate and
graduate students is offered through 10 academic colleges Agriculture and Life
Sciences, Architecture, Dwight Look College of Engineering, Geosciences and Maritime
Studies, Liberal Arts, Lowery Mays College of Business Administration and Graduate School
of Business, Medicine, Science and Veterinary Medicine. The University is a top ten
university in many categories including total enrollment, total undergraduate enrollment,
research expenditures, number of merit scholars, and number of residence hall spaces.
Today, over 43,000 students are enrolled at the university.
B. Texas A&M University Statement of Purpose
Texas A&M University is a public institution dedicated to the
development and dissemination of knowledge in many and diversified academic and
professional fields. The University is committed to assist students in their search for
knowledge, to help them understand themselves and their cultural and physical
environments, and to develop in them the wisdom and skills needed to assume responsibility
in a democratic society. The University assumes as its historic trust the maintenance and
enhancement of an intellectual environment that encourages the development and expansion
of the human mind and spirit. While continuing to fulfill its mission as a land grant /
sea grant / space grant institution, the University is evolving and expanding its role to
meet the challenging needs of state, national and international communities. The
University aspires to preeminence in teaching, research and service.
