In support of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets will be wearing teal ribbons as part of their uniforms throughout the month of April.

 

Event Name: Hygiene Drive for SARC of BCS

Date: April 2nd – April 19th, 2017

Omega Phi Alpha is collecting hygiene products that can be put into ‘Care Packages’ for SARC to give to survivors after their sexual assault exams. Items being collected include travel sized shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, disposable underwear, socks, pads (no tampons), and scrubs for them to change into in order to feel as clean and healthy as possible. This drive begins on April 2nd and will end with a human trafficking seminar on April 19th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in Rudder 602. MSC Lead is hosting their own Sexual Assault Awareness Week to increase awareness that sexual assault is a problem occurs on campus and across the world. Come see a visual representations of the staggering percentage of people that are affected by sexual assault, get free swag from the Step In Stand Up campaign, resources from SARC and the Office of CLEAR, and take a pledge to help end sexual assault on our campus.

 

Event Name: Green Dot Bystander Intervention Training

The Office of Consensual Language, Education, Awareness, and Relationships will be hosting a Green Dot Bystander Intervention Training on April 5th from 5 PM to 9 PM in Hullabaloo 117A for Texas A&M students. The Green Dot Strategy is an approach to violence prevention that focuses on active bystander intervention. Through training, participants will learn how to use the 3 D’s (direct, delegate, and distract) to intervene in any acts of power-based personal violence that they may witness. Event Name: “Moonlight” Screening

The Women’s and Gender Studies, Film Studies, and Africana Studies Programs are teaming up to present the Brazos County’s first public screening of "Moonlight," the 2016 Academy Award winner for Best Picture on April 5th at 7 PM in Rudder Forum. "Moonlight" artfully tells the coming-of-age story of a young, gay African-American in the Miami housing projects focusing on three pivotal periods in his life: as a child, a teenager, and finally as an adult. Dealing with important issues related to sexuality, masculinity, class, and race including sexual trauma, bullying, and addiction. There will be a panel discussion immediately following the screening featuring Joseph Jewell (Sociology, Africana Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies), Lisa Ellis (Women’s and Gender Studies, Film Studies) and Daniel Humphrey (Film Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies). The Sexual Assault Resource Center will be hosting their annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month Kickoff event at Anco Insurance (1111 Briarcrest Dr, Bryan, April 6th TX) at 5:30pm. A proclamation marking the official start of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month will be read and there will be other opportunities to help SARC raise awareness of sexual violence in our communities! Event Name: Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP) Class

The Texas A&M University Police Department will be holding a FREE self-defense class on April 6th from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM in UPD 126C. SHARP: Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention is a specially designed self-defense class for women only, teaching easy to learn techniques for a variety of situations. Female faculty, staff, and students are welcome as well as moms since it is Family Weekend. Preregistration is required and can be done at http://studentlife.tamu.edu/clear.sharp. Join MSC LEAD in raising awareness of issues regarding sexual assault in the Bryan-College Station area by wearing a sexual assault awareness related quote on your hand. They will be distributing stamps with the quote “Consent is Sexy” to Northgate/local bars to use to mark entrants in addition to the establishment’s own markers used for under/over 21 admissions for the weekend of April 7th – April 9th.

The Brazos County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (BCCADV) is hosting a washer’s tournament to raise funds for education and outreach efforts provided by local law enforcement, mental health professionals, and community members. This tournament will take place on April 8th from 12 PM to 6 PM at Smitty K’s (12601 HWY 30, College Station, TX). Make a team and come enjoy live music from local artists. There will also be a silent auction with lots of great items! All are welcome and the entry fee is $5 and team registration is $20. Event Name: Texas A&M University Baseball “Teal Out” Game

Join our survivors and advocates as we partner with Texas A&M University Athletics in the first “Teal Out” game of 2017 as the Aggies take on the Auburn Tigers on April 8th at 3pm. Survivors will be throwing out the first pitch of the game while student-athletes and advocates collect “Care Package” donations. SARC provides “Care Packages” consisting of toiletry items (i.e. shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, underwear, scrubs, deodorant, feminine hygiene pads, socks, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc) to all survivors as they arrive at the hospital and complete the Forensic Exams. 

 

Event Name: Sexual Assault in Minority’s Communities

The Student Anti-Violence Educators (SAVE) is partnering with the Department of Multicultural Services (DMS) to host a conversation about sexual assault specifically in minority communities. This presentation will take place in MSC 2405 on April 11th at 5:00 PM. All are welcome to attend.

Sponsor: FREE and Feminism 4 Aggies

Presented by Texas A&M Feminists for Reproductive Equity and Education and hosted by Feminism 4 Aggies, this workshop will focus on defining consent, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and Title IX as it applies to Aggies. It will be held on April 12th from 7 PM to 8 PM in the Administration Building and all are welcome to attend. It is a free event and no registration is required.

The Collegiate Panhellenic Council and Interfraternal Council will be hosting The Clothesline Project, a nationwide sexual assault and domestic violence awareness program, on April 17th. A clothesline with t-shirts hanging that describe stories of people that were sexually assaulted or victims of domestic violence will be displayed in Rudder Plaza from 9 AM to 4 PM. All are welcome. Event Name: Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Information Panel

Date: April 18th, 2017

Sponsor: The College of Nursing

The College of Nursing will host a panel of certified sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs) on April 18th from 6 PM to 7:30 PM, providing information about the SANE function and role in the sexual assault investigation process. In addition to discussing the impact of SANEs, they will also provide information on campus and community resources, as well as offer general safety and post-assault recommendations, and tips for recognizing signs and symptoms of possible assault. After the panel discussion, there will be allotted time for audience Q&A. This event will take place at 8447 Riverside Parkway, Bryan, TX—Health Professions Education Building Room LL30. The event is open to anyone and is free but RSVP is required to provide free parking, you can RSVP by emailing mhoffman@tamhsc.edu

Texas A&M Omega Phi Alpha is hosting a seminar in order to is to bring awareness to the cruelty and horrors of human trafficking and how students can help out in the efforts to stop it. On April 19th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM in Rudder 602, a speaker that works at The Children's Center in Galveston will be speaking on how to be more aware of human trafficking locally and what we can do to help. Join the Student Anti-Violence Educators (SAVE) on Wednesday, April 26th in Rudder Plaza from 9 AM to 2 PM for a nation-wide campaign called Denim Day! “The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans. In this rape prevention education campaign we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault."
