Letter to Parents of First-Year Student

One of the greatest challenges students will face when coming to college is the pressure they may encounter regarding alcohol. Peer pressure tends to be extremely prevalent at the beginning of the school year. For some students, attending Texas A&M University may be their first time to be independent from family members. In an effort to encourage students to make responsible decisions as college students, Texas A&M University has established alcohol policies and provides alcohol education resources and support for students through Student Life’s Alcohol and Drug Education Programs (ADEP) Office.

Even though parents may not think so, their own opinions and beliefs affect how their student makes decisions concerning alcohol use. We encourage parents to have ongoing discussions about alcohol with their student especially during their impressionable first year at Texas A&M University. These conversations are particularly important before New Student Conferences. Please feel free to contact ADEP with questions or concerns.

ADEP works closely with students and parents to address issues of alcohol and drug use. Your student may come to speak with us anytime Monday - Friday from 9:00am - 5:00pm. For emergencies, students should call the Counseling Center at (979) 845-4427 during working hours and (979)845-2700 after hours. There are numerous resources for your student with regards to drugs and alcohol. If you have a question or concern, please contact us at (979) 845-0280 so that we can help you locate the appropriate resources. Please discuss this important information with your student and encourage them to seek the resources available at Texas A&M University.

The Choice is Up To You.
