Suggestions for Faculty/Staff Approaches to Confronting Student Alcohol
Issues
|
|
- Every week during Thursday and Friday classes or meetings, end by
saying, "Have a fun and safe weekend. And if you choose to drink,
do so responsibly and always designate a driver."
- Be aware of advertisements in classrooms, meeting areas, residence
halls, etc. (i.e. "Booze Cruise" ads, "All U Can
Drink" vacation packages).
- During Alcohol Awareness Week (October) & Safe Spring Break
(March/April), conduct a short discussion about alcohol, abuse, effects
on our community, etc.
- Monitor personal language and examples regarding alcohol use.
- Make responsible decisions for yourself regarding alcohol (i.e. don't
drink with your students).
- Sponsor alcohol free events, such as an alcohol-free tailgate party.
- Be aware of an odd decrease in students' performance (especially if
sudden), such as skipping class or meetings, poor performance on tests
and projects, withdrawal from discussions, unprofessional behavior.
These can be signs of alcohol and drug abuse.
- Informatively confront students when overhearing "drunk
stories" or when signs of alcohol or drug abuse present themselves.
- Promote alternatives to drinking, such as alcohol free events (i.e.
Aggie Nights).
- Participate in and be visible during alcohol awareness and education
events (i.e. Alcohol Awareness Week).
- Before hosting a student organization sponsored event where alcohol
will be present, review the signs of alcohol poisoning with those
chaperoning and attending.
- Invite Alcohol & Drug Education Programs to come speak with your
class, organization, or at an event.
